One Beat by Sleater-Kinney. Girls Rock, game over!
Yeah sometimes I really enjoy just rocking out and these fine ladies can throw down some serious rock love.
With this track in particular I have many a fond memory of turning around to find I have an audience. A laughing audience.
Oh and for you science freaks this song is about fusion! The power of the future!
Lyrics:
I'm a bubble in a sound wave
A sonic push for energy
Exploding like the sun
A flash of clean light hope
All you scientists can hold your breath
Shall I decide to show myself? Oh oh
If you think like Thomas Edison
Could you invent a world for me
Now all that's on the surface
Are bloody arms and oil fields
Could I turn this place upside down
And shake you and your fossils out? Oh oh
Should I come outside and run your cars
Should I run your rockets to the stars
Could you invent a world for me
I need to hear a symphony
If I'm to run the future
You've got to let the old world go Oh oh
Your word for me is fusion
But is real change an illusion
Could I turn this place all upside down
And shake you and your fossils out
If I'm to run the future
You've got to let the old world go
Could you invent a world for me
I need to hear a symphony Oh oh

I always like to see chicks getting in on the rock scene. They bring a very raw element of energy that the men just can't duplicate. That being said, I've never found a girl band that I really wanted to spend my money on.
ReplyDeleteThat raw, chick-power energy runs rampant through this song, and the low-fi recording style handily accentuates that.
It's also a really clever approach to a very intriguing subject.
The only thing that will keep me from listening to this song over and over again is the shrill vocal style. I just can't take that in more than a 3-minute dose per week.
i loved this song. i'm a huge fan of out and out rock coupled with poetic lyrics. i'm also a sucker for female singers with a distinct vocal style.
ReplyDeleteThere is something very raw and effusive about this song. Makes me sense that there is value in listening to it beyond euphony . . . even if I can't put my finger on what that would be.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good girl rocker song for sure and very evocative.
