Until now Song Share has been done by random invitation, but now I'd like to open it up to everyone. If you would like to do a Song Share (or if you want to do another Song Share, or if you want to do many and multiple Song Shares) write it (them) up and send it to me at: kohlglass@gmail.com
Where's what I will need from you for a Song Share.
1. A write up on the song
2. A link or some place we can hear the complete song online, traditionally this has been Youtube.
3. The lyrics to the song, if the song has lyrics.
4. The band's website and/or any other pertinent links you might want to include.
5. Anything else you can think of.
I'll take as many Song Shares as you want to do. This way we can build up a store that I will gradually post every (or every other) Monday. So please start sending them in!

Song Share: Year Of The Rat
By Amy McKay
i have to admit that i probably may not have latched onto this song if i hadn't seen the video accompanying it. but, i did see it and i liked it. i think i just liked the idea of being able to hug away the world's and people's problems, as well as the idea that, when one and one come together, we're not two, but a stronger one (i.e., unified).
informational tidbits, per wikipedia:
Lyrics:
(One, one, one, one, one, one. One, one, one, one, one, one)
June is on the run for so long
Pushed and pulled then shunned
It was so wrong
These fours walls crashing in won't stop me now
Cause I'm alive, I'm out tonight, all night
Everybody needs to know it's the year of the rat
Every day we've got to hold on
'cause if we hold on we could find some new energy
Streets with flags unfurled like treasure
Thank me for my words, it's a pleasure
Just don't ask me to stay 'cause I'll be gone
But it's alright I'm OK - always
Everybody needs to know it's the year of the rat
Every day we've got to hold on
'cause if we hold on we could find some new energy
One plus one is one - together
One plus one is one - forever
One plus one is one - together
One plus one is one - forever
Everybody needs to know it's the year of the rat
Everybody needs to know it's the year of the rat
Everybody needs to know it's the year of the rat

Damon Gough chose his stage name from the title character in the TV show Sam and his Magic Ball. In 2002, Q magazine named Badly Drawn Boy in their list of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die", although this was as part of a sub-list of "5 Bands That Could Go Either Way" on account of Gough's tendency to talk and tell stories for extended periods rather than playing songs. The album One Plus One Is One (which contains "Year of the Rat") was a portrait of his personal life. Documenting a death of a close friend and the loss of a grandfather. Released in 2004, it was not a great commercial success, and Gough decided to leave his contract with XL Recordings after only one single was released. As best as i can understand, the rat in the chinese zodiac is associated with protection and material prosperity, whatever that adds to it for you.

Song Share: AM180
By Scott Stinocher
This is a band that i really love. Sadly, they are no longer making music, but this is still one of my favorite songs all time. I don't really have a ton to say, so you will just have to enjoy it.
A.M. 180 by Grandaddy
Lyrics:
Don’t change your name
Keep it the same
For fear I may lose you again
I know you won't
It's just that I
Am unorganized
And I want to find you
When something good happens
If you come down
We'll go to town
I haven't been there for years
But I’d be fine
Wasting our time
Not doing anything here
Just doing nothing
We’ll sit for days
And talk about things
Important to us like whatever
We'll defuse bombs
And walk marathons
And take on whatever, together

Song Share: As Tall As Cliffs
By J.C. Glass
Richard Edwards formed the band named Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s in 2004. He named the band after Gwyneth Paltrow’s character Margot Tenenbaum from Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums. After recording 25 songs for their second albam with Epic Records in October 2007, the band disagreed with Epic over which songs to include on the album. Consequently, two versions of the album were released: “Animal”only on vinyl, the band's preferred version, and “Not Animal”, a traditional CD release chosen by the label. This song appears on both versions. I hope you enjoy it!
As Tall As Cliffs by Margot and the Nuclear So and So's
Lyrics:
I tell tales tall as cliffs
You've got a lisp
Kid, those things are hard to miss
When you're drunk you just make love, honey please
Like you've got somewhere to be
But I can't bear to hear the things about last year
I've been up all night, up all night
And I can't bear to hear the things about last year
I've been up all night, up all night
You came well-equipped
With a gun on your hip
And some poison on your lips
But when we wake up in our makeup
We'll be clean 'cause we ain't got nowhere to be
And I can't talk to you the way I wanted to
I've been telling lies, but I'll tell you the truth
And I can't talk to you the way I wanted to
I've been telling lies, but I'll tell you the truth
Darling, I'm tired
I should be leaving, leaving
You know I'm tired
I should be leaving, leaving tonight
Darling, I'm tired
I should be leaving, leaving
You know I'm tired
I should be leaving
Baby I'm tired
I should be leaving, leaving
You know I'm tired
I should be leaving, leaving alright

Song Share: The Girl
by Francisco Manzo-Flores
Alright, so this is my first attempt at Song Share, so I am starting out by tipping the toes into the water so to speak and going in with an easy-to-like entry from City and Colour. Those of you that know me are aware that my taste in music is pretty broad, and in time I expect to be able to bring into this forum a variety of music, but I felt it might be wise to start out with something that will serve as a good foundation for the rest. No need for me to wreck my reputation before I get started :D.
This particular song was one of those accidental finds during one of many downloading sessions where a name catches your eye and you download it simply out of curiosity. As it turns out City and Colour has a lot of pretty good stuff, most of it on the acoustic rock vein, of which this is a pretty good sample. Though not overly complex in formula, I think it is the simplicity of this song, the paired guitars and straight froward lyrics that make it so approachable. Anybody that has ever been in a relationship (I think that is all of us), knows how easy it can be to lose perspective, become selfish and take a partner for granted when they have been next to you for so long, or here and there one might hit that bump on the road that wakes you up to the treasure you may be holding to. Without being overly preachy or beating the subject on the head with a mallet, this song expresses the spirit of gratitude in a folkishly charming way. I do hope you guys like it.
The Girl by City and Colour
Lyrics:
I wish I could do better by you,
Cos that's what you deserve.
You sacrifice so much of your life,
In order for this to work.
While I'm off chasing my own dreams,
Sailing around the world,
Please know that I'm yours to keep,
My beautiful girl.
And when you cry a piece of my heart dies,
Knowing that I may have been the cause,
If you were to leave, fulfill someone elses dreams,
I think I might totally be lost.
But you don't ask for no diamond rings,
No delicate string of pearls,
That's why I wrote this song to sing,
My beautiful girl

Song Share: Sally's Song
by Todd Hamilton
I chose a cover of a song this week. The song is "Sally's Song" from The Nightmare Before Christmas, performed by Amy Lee, found on the album Nightmare Revisited. I felt this song fit this season, the time between Halloween and Christmas and I feel Amy's interpretation gives this song a little more depth than the film version. Plus, as socially inept girls are to the Twilight series, I am to Amy Lee's voice.
Lyrics:
I sense there's something in the wind
That feels like tragedy's at hand
And though I'd like to stand by him
Can't shake this feeling that I have
The worst is just around the bend
And does he notice my feelings for him?
And will he see how much he means to me?
I think it's not to be
What will become of my dear friend?
Where will his actions lead us then?
Although I'd like to join the crowd
In their enthusiastic cloud
Try as I may, it doesn't last
And will we ever end up together?
no, I think not, it's never to become
For I am not the one

Song Share: Lightning Crashes
by Angus McKay
A few months back, I was singing to myself at work. I do this mostly to get the annoying songs that they play at work out of my head. Anyway, on this particular day I decided to dig a little deeper in my song memory bank for something I hadn't heard in a while. I found a place that had been locked and hidden away for many years. It was the music of my high school years. As I played through these long-forgotten songs in my mind, I found that I still loved them like I did before. Pearl Jam, Spin Doctors, Collective Soul, Tonic, Nirvana, and others all came flooding back to me. It was great.
One song in particular stood out to me. I kind of consider it the anthem of my high school class (whether the others of the class of 97 will agree may be questionable). Anyway, for those of you who know it: I hope it brings back good feelings the same way it did for me. For those who are hearing it for the first time: welcome to my world.
This is Live: Lightning Crashes.
Lyrics:
lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door
lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now, to the baby down the hall
oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it.
lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored eyes,
presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide

Song Share: One Beat
By Martin Gonzalez
One Beat by Sleater-Kinney. Girls Rock, game over!
Yeah sometimes I really enjoy just rocking out and these fine ladies can throw down some serious rock love.
With this track in particular I have many a fond memory of turning around to find I have an audience. A laughing audience.
Oh and for you science freaks this song is about fusion! The power of the future!
Lyrics:
I'm a bubble in a sound wave
A sonic push for energy
Exploding like the sun
A flash of clean light hope
All you scientists can hold your breath
Shall I decide to show myself? Oh oh
If you think like Thomas Edison
Could you invent a world for me
Now all that's on the surface
Are bloody arms and oil fields
Could I turn this place upside down
And shake you and your fossils out? Oh oh
Should I come outside and run your cars
Should I run your rockets to the stars
Could you invent a world for me
I need to hear a symphony
If I'm to run the future
You've got to let the old world go Oh oh
Your word for me is fusion
But is real change an illusion
Could I turn this place all upside down
And shake you and your fossils out
If I'm to run the future
You've got to let the old world go
Could you invent a world for me
I need to hear a symphony Oh oh

Concert: Crooked Fingers
I've never shared a Cooked Fingers song at Music Night before, and neither has any of my siblings, despite us all being huge fans . . . but I'm sure it's bound to happen eventually. Regardless, Crooked Fingers is coming in concert to Tucson AZ Friday, Nov 14, 2008 9:30 PM MST (9:00 PM Doors) at Plush. A bunch of us are planning on going down, and I wanted to invite any and all who are interested to come with us. All you have to do is let me know via email, blog comments, or phone call. Crooked Fingers is some of the best concerts I've ever been too. If you are lukewarm on their music, concert attendance will change all that.
So come! You won't regret it.
So come! You won't regret it.

Song Share: Wise Up
By Marcus Howard
Wise Up by Aimee Mann. Almost word-for-word how I've been feeling over the past year..... Not much more to say than that.
Lyrics:
It's not
What you thought
When you first began it
You got
What you want
Now you can hardly stand it though,
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
You're sure
There's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think
One drink
Will shrink you 'til you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
Prepare a list of what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just...give up

Song Share: Heart of Steel
by Jake Parker
This song is called Heart of Steel by ManOwaR on their album Kings of Steel (1988). It tells of a lone warrior coming home from a long battle. Though the battle was hard, he prevailed and is returning triumphantly. Heart of Steel is about more than just that. It's about standing up for your beliefs, for what you know is right, even in the face of ridicule and scorn. And though the forces that rise up against you may be powerful, and all you want to do is give up, throw in the towel and quit, ManOwaR reminds you that you were born with a heart of steel. That if you live by your heart there is always one more try. And in doing so you will prevail.
What about the band itself? I think this quote from founding band member says it all: "I believe in the fans. I believe in metal more than anybody you've ever met. And another thing, I'm prepared to die for metal. Are you?"
Lyrics:
Build a fire a thousand miles away
To light my long way home
I ride a comet
My trail is long to stay
Silence is a heavy stone
I fight the world and take all they can give
There are times my heart hangs low
Born to walk against the wind
Born to hear my name
No matter where I stand Im alone
Stand and fight
Live by your heart
Always one more try
Im not afraid to die
Stand and fight
Say what you feel
Born with a heart of steel
Burn the bridge behind you
Leave no retreat
Theres only one way home
Those who laugh and crowd the path
And cut each others throats
Will fall like melting snow
Theyll watch us rise with fire in our eyes
Theyll bow their heads
Their hearts will hang low
Then well laugh and they will kneel
And know this heart of steel was
Too hard to break
Too hard to hold
Stand and fight
Live by your heart
Always one more try
Im not afraid to die
Stand and fight
Say what you feel
Born with a heart of steel
This song is called Heart of Steel by ManOwaR on their album Kings of Steel (1988). It tells of a lone warrior coming home from a long battle. Though the battle was hard, he prevailed and is returning triumphantly. Heart of Steel is about more than just that. It's about standing up for your beliefs, for what you know is right, even in the face of ridicule and scorn. And though the forces that rise up against you may be powerful, and all you want to do is give up, throw in the towel and quit, ManOwaR reminds you that you were born with a heart of steel. That if you live by your heart there is always one more try. And in doing so you will prevail.
What about the band itself? I think this quote from founding band member says it all: "I believe in the fans. I believe in metal more than anybody you've ever met. And another thing, I'm prepared to die for metal. Are you?"
Lyrics:
Build a fire a thousand miles away
To light my long way home
I ride a comet
My trail is long to stay
Silence is a heavy stone
I fight the world and take all they can give
There are times my heart hangs low
Born to walk against the wind
Born to hear my name
No matter where I stand Im alone
Stand and fight
Live by your heart
Always one more try
Im not afraid to die
Stand and fight
Say what you feel
Born with a heart of steel
Burn the bridge behind you
Leave no retreat
Theres only one way home
Those who laugh and crowd the path
And cut each others throats
Will fall like melting snow
Theyll watch us rise with fire in our eyes
Theyll bow their heads
Their hearts will hang low
Then well laugh and they will kneel
And know this heart of steel was
Too hard to break
Too hard to hold
Stand and fight
Live by your heart
Always one more try
Im not afraid to die
Stand and fight
Say what you feel
Born with a heart of steel
Song Share
We are going to try something new with the Music Night Blog, something we're calling Song Share. It will work like this: One person will be chosen to share a song. That person will write a short summary about the song and why they selected it. Then using the comments we can have a discussion about the song . . . just like a real Music Night. I am hoping we can do a new Song Share every week. I'm also hoping it is going to be an awesome supplement to Music Night.

Back in the Early Days
Back in the early days of Music Night we didn't make CDs and no one thought to keep a record of who was in attendance and what songs were shared.
As far as we know there have been at least 11 Music Nights (10 of which we have some record of attendees and songs), though it is possible there have been 13 or more.
The first Music Night was documented, but the following Nights, between March 2006 and April 2007, were lost to history . . . so far. We're working to piece things together, if at all possible.
That said, even the Music Nights we do have record of are susceptible to error and memory loss. Not everything is going to be 100%, but we're working on that one too.
If there are mistakes, please speak up and let us know. We want to have this "Archive of Music Nights" be as correct as possible.

1. Each person brings one song to share.
2. The person presenting the song may choose to give a short introduction (historical or personal) of the song.
3. After a song is shared a discussion of the song follows.
4. At the end of Music Night a CD compilation is made of all the songs shared that eventing.

Once Upon a Time
Once upon a time, Angus McKay, Marcus Howard and I were over at the Boyles working on the soundtrack for my short film Der Ostwind back in the early half of 2006.
This being a long time ago, memory may have shifted from reality to whimsy, but I can only report what I remember.
I was talking with Marcus, while Angus was working on the soundtrack, about how back in days of yore, friends would get together and listen to records together . . . a past time that has faded away with the advent of more fascinating technologies.
Anyway I was telling Marcus that I always thought it would be cool to periodically get together as a group to share and discuss music . . . an idea Marcus said he could support with some enthusiasm.
Shortly after, Angus planned the first Music Night, claiming that Marcus and I would only talk about this idea and never do it. I don't know about that, but maybe he was right.
Either way Music Night was born.
