Song Share: Sally's Song

by Todd Hamilton

I chose a cover of a song this week. The song is "Sally's Song" from The Nightmare Before Christmas, performed by Amy Lee, found on the album Nightmare Revisited. I felt this song fit this season, the time between Halloween and Christmas and I feel Amy's interpretation gives this song a little more depth than the film version. Plus, as socially inept girls are to the Twilight series, I am to Amy Lee's voice.

Lyrics:
I sense there's something in the wind
That feels like tragedy's at hand
And though I'd like to stand by him
Can't shake this feeling that I have
The worst is just around the bend

And does he notice my feelings for him?
And will he see how much he means to me?
I think it's not to be

What will become of my dear friend?
Where will his actions lead us then?
Although I'd like to join the crowd
In their enthusiastic cloud
Try as I may, it doesn't last

And will we ever end up together?
no, I think not, it's never to become
For I am not the one

  1. When Nightmare Before Christmas came out back in 1993, I read a not so favorable review which said that the music was "forgettable" (I remember this because it was the first time I heard the word "forgettable" and I've been using it since). For the most part I agreed with that sentiment. I didn't really care for the music save for a few songs like "This is Halloween". "Sally's Song" I was indifferent to.

It's now my favorite song. Amy Lee's voice is a force of nature. It evokes so much emotion and power. She really is amazing . . . uh oh, I feel an Evanescence phase coming on.

  2. 10 points for the swap over to harp at the end. That was awesome.

  3. this nails two of the touchstones of what i consider magic in my life: that fairytale feeling that i get from Nightmare, and the sweet darkness and clarity of a really evocative, beautifully used instrument. i have been captivated by amy lee's voice since i first heard it on the radio in provo. thanks, todd, i really loved this post. and so does everyone in our house where we play it over and over.

  4. That was really good! When you said Nightmare Before Christmas my first thought was "uh-oh." I didn't forget the music from that movie I remembered how bad it was. But this Amy Lee takes it to a whole new level. They should redo the movie with her singing.

This was the first song I heard myself singing to my newborn second son.
